Canada has reached a preliminary trade agreement with China, its second-largest trading partner, after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Beijing, China, Jan. 14-17 for high-level meetings with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang and others.
Some speculate that the agreement is Canada’s response to trade tensions with the U.S. and President Trump’s tariff war. Some Canadian goods not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement face U.S. import tariffs of up to 50%.
