Premiumization 2.0: Alternative formulations on the rise

As pet owners continue to humanize their companion animals and prioritize wellness-centered lifestyles, the pet food market has entered a new era of innovation: premiumization 2.0. While premiumization in pet foods historically depended primarily on differences in ingredients, today’s innovations focus on formulation. Fresh and gently cooked diets, freeze-dried raw products, air-dried recipes and baked pet foods are all gaining traction as consumers increasingly seek alternatives to traditional extruded kibble. While each format offers distinct benefits, together they reflect a broader shift toward perceived ingredient integrity, processing transparency and premium nutrition.
